Visiting dog friendly farms and supporting them is part of our weekly routine and or course, Maze & Nyx tag along. From fresh veggies, baked goods to flower farms, they always bring joy to our day. Finding fresh food in the summer is the best, but nothing beats visiting the same farms in the fall for more fresh food, but the pumpkins, squashes and corn makes it that much more magical!
There are many amazing farms but we only like to write about what we have experienced and here are the farms we have been to!
Farmer’s Markets
Farmer’s Markets are plentiful and I am sure you can find one in your local area if you are not from Durham Region. Being from Whitby, we love the Whitby and Brooklin Farmer’s Market. The Whitby Market is on Wednesdays and the Brooklin Market is on Saturdays and both are dog friendly!
Each of the markets offers a vast selection of items so not only can you get your local farm fresh items, you can also shop local makers and wineries and ciders. We have a special place for My Sister’s Gift House which is always is at these markets as they are the creators of our super fun Everything-Dog.ca sweatshirts!
Hy-Hope Farm
Hy-Hope Farm is THE place to get your pie! Order ahead though as this is not a secret!
Yes, Hy-Hope Farm has a bakery as well as a store with a ton of goodies in it. There is fresh vegetables, fruits, preserves and so many very good baked goods. Hy-Hope Farm is located at 5450 Lakeridge Rd. Ashburn, Ontario.
Although the dogs are not allowed in store, they are allowed on the patio. After we purchase our favorite fruits, vegetables and goodies, we head over to the patio for some lunch with live music which made the afternoon perfect. Hy-Hope Farm has live music every weekend from 12 pm to 4 pm!
Nature’s Bounty
Nature’s Bounty is a dog friendly apple orchard. This place is one of our favorites in the fall to get our pumpkins for the fall and apples for all of the apple pies we can make.
Historically, we have made our appointment to attend online and paid our vehicle fee. We love to pick our apples first and then visit their open air shop to get our pumpkins, hot cider and squashes. On the busy weekends they have had fun popups with recipes and tasting tables. As an added bonus, there are lots of animals for the kids to visit. We can easily spend the afternoon here with Maze & Nyx. To read about our full visit, please click here.
Bragg Farms
We visited Bragg Farms during the height of the sunflower season and we had so much fun! The farm is located at 3048 Concession Road 3, Bowmanville and welcomes dogs daily between 9 am and 10 am. Walking through the sunflowers will bring a smile to anyone’s face. Click here to read about our visit!
The farm is a seed farm so even if it isn’t sunflower season, make sure you visit their store to get your bird seed! In the fall the farm offers pick your own potatoes and sweet potatoes so watch their social media for when they are ready to be picked.
Willowtree Farm
A Port Perry favorite is Willowtree Farm. In the last couple of years it has also procured Pingle Farms and has extended their amazing atmosphere to this farm as well. We have not had a chance to get there yet but we are looking for ward to it! Located 975 Regional Rd. 21,Port Perry, Willowtree Farm has a little bit of everything.
The main building on the property is a butcher, store and bistro with seating inside and outside. The store is amazing and has fresh fruit and vegetable, pies, cookies, breads, baked goods. It also showcases local artisans pottery, dog products, pictures, natural body products. The butcher offers all kids of cuts of meats as well as frozen products to take home. Although this area isn’t dog friendly, the patio out in the front does allow dogs, so we enjoy grabbing a treat or food and sitting outside with Maze & Nyx. They even offer local beers!
Outside there is a lovely space with more area to sit at picnic table and there is wonderful play area for the kids. If you have dogs and kids, this is a nice spot to let the dogs chill at the table with you while the kids play in the play ground. There is a very neat “sandbox” that is filled with corn!
There is animals for you to stop and say “hello” to – goats, a very large pig and rabbits!
We love supporting local and these farms are a perfect way to do that!
