If you’re travelling along highway 7 and looking for a place to stretch your legs, historic Marmora is a must see with lots to do with both kids and dogs. There is a playground, lots of country shops, hiking trail and the Marmora off leash dog park. Whether you only have half an hour or want to spend the entire day, you’ll be glad you checked it out!
Summer Visit to Dog Park and Hiking Trail
If you only have time for a quick stop, head over to the off leash dog park in Marmora. It’s a great place for the puppy to burn off some energy and run around.
This park is located just south of the ball diamond at highway 7 and Cameron Street. It is a fenced in area offering about 40m x 40m of grassed area for the dogs to run around. There is also a picnic table under a nice shade tree where we enjoyed a snack.
By far, my favourite part of this park was the cute and simple big O-ring on a PVC pipe play feature. My pup, only 10 months old at the time, had never tried jumping through a ring and we spent a good half hour playing on it. It took a few tries at first to get her to jump through it, but then she was hooked!
It was a hot summer day in July and we had the entire park to ourselves. If you forgot your poop bags, no worries, there were ones available next to the entrance gate to use.
If you are looking for a nearby treat, walk across the road to hometown cones ice cream on Forsyth Street. They are super friendly and have a store front window that you can order your ice cream from the sidewalk. For $1, you can get a puppy cone of ice cream, which Nala loves! We normally eat ours in Marmora Memorial Park while we enjoy a cool breeze off the river.
Suzanne, Maze and Nyx joined us in August for ice cream in the park too!
Have an hour or so, or in need of a longer walk, Nayler’s Commons Trail is a beautiful walk. Located along highway 7, just west of the Tim Horton’s is this forested trail.
The trail head parking lot is on the south side of Highway 7, and is free to use while hiking. There are lots of trail signs on the trees, as you wander through the forest. Today, we walked for about half an hour and hiked about 2 km. A perfect quick trail walk to stretch your legs before getting back in the car.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Marmora, who recently celebrated their 200th anniversary.
If you have a bit longer to stay and visit, Marmora has other pet friendly places to visit. Be sure to check out are the historic Marmora Mine or the Hastings Heritage Trail.
Spring Visit to Off Leash Dog Park
Celebrating a beautiful Mother’s day weekend with family we slipped over to visit to the Marmora off leash dog park with Nala. The first thing I noticed when we arrived is the grass was lush and green this time of year. We enjoyed chatting with some friendly visitors while Nala ran around with some puppy friends. They mentioned that the area under the large tree was saturated earlier in the spring due to the rain.
Marmora’s fully fenced off leash dog park has a single area with a single gate entrance. Although there isn’t a water tap, everyone shares water or you can walk over to the river for a drink. Nala was having a great time playing fetch along the long thin area of the park.
Please be careful if there is a ball game going on, this area is just outside the outfield fence. Although we didn’t find any balls, they could easily go over the fence to this area.
