Located about 8 km north of Port Perry, along Old Simcoe Road is the 3.5 km Cragg North Trail. The trail head just east of Cragg Road, and has a small area on the side of the road for one vehicle to park.
There is nothing like going for a hike with the sound of freshly fallen snow crunching under your boots and the cool air on your face. As soon as we got out of the car, the dogs were excited to get out and run around in the snow. Both Nala and Nyx LOVE the snow!!! Maze… I believe Maze loves to walk, and tolerates the cold weather.
As you enter the main trail, it is well marked and about the width of an ATV. Unfortunately, the trail is quite rutted with ATV tracks, making it a bit challenging to walk in some spots. But the dogs were having a great time!
The in and out portion of the trail is through the coniferous trees, which was absolutely beautiful in the freshly fallen snow. The trail starts out fairly wide, but soon becomes quite overgrown and only about 2 feet wide. In several sections you had to be mindful not to let the tree branches whip back and hit the person behind you as you walked.
Looking at the map, some of the loop portion of this trail, which is on the edge of the deciduous trees, is close to the wet lands. We noticed that some of the paths were flooded out (ice covered), and other paths had several ice spots that we had to be careful when trying to get around. At this time, I would suggest hiking this trail with a friend or avoid walking alone due to the possibility of falling through some of the ice spots.
Even with the snow and ice patches, it took us about 1 hour 15 minutes to walk the trail. Tails wagging, Nyx and Nala ran back and forth chasing and sharing sticks. Maze was happy to supervise and make sure the pups stayed in sight. Overall, a beautiful day to be outside and enjoying nature.
